Joe Colombo

The influential Italian designer Joe Colombo (1930–1971) was a big fan of democratic and functional design. He designed flexible, adaptable objects and furniture, intended to be used in many different ways – all for the benefit of the user and the consumer. He managed to create a lot despite his all-too-short life, and today his products are exhibited in museums all over the world, and the Museum of Modern Art has some in its permanent collection.

As a designer, he created furniture with a high degree of flexibility and many modes of use – for the benefit and enjoyment of the user. During his lifetime, he experimented with new types of materials and the latest technology. Notably, he designed visionary machines for living, several of which have achieved iconic status and are listed as symbols of our modern lifestyle.
